This is mostly as a point of curiosity (and also maybe a way to encourage players to try out something new)-what's the best national idea group? Start position/techgroup/unique events aside, for the most part.
Some of my thoughts-Austria for insane diplomacy. The change to vassalization (and coalition woes) makes a diplomatic approach much more attractive in 1.2 and Austrian ideas can take full advantage of that.-Brandenburg for sheer troop strength. People have talked best army ideas to death here, but if you discount the Swedish discipline event the Brandenburgian ideas take the cake.-Poland as generalist. Every Polish idea is just wonderful to get, and Winged Hussars might be the largest single increase in strength among all ideas. Polish cavalry armies are just brutal. Also one of the only (I think) european nations with religious unity, which does wonders for the reformation.-Russia for ALL THE MEN.
Manpower is a much bigger concern in 1.2, and man does Russia get a lot of it. Arguably the best idea group for high expansion due to the near-limitless manpower pool.-Najd. One of the very few ways to get extra maneuver on a general, and conversion boon means you can still go no piety and convert, or go full piety and CONVERT. Otherwise, lots of powerful all-around ideas.-I said Oman, but I didnt realize their maintenance got nerfed. Makes them much worse.-Punjab.
Forts getting deleted cost me. I’m not the best EU4 player. And by the end some of Tidore declared independence too. It is so hard holding a massive empire even with Humanist ideas, I am going to dread WC. I do want to do it but, maybe I just need to pick a better nation that isn’t so reliant on sea stuff for its ideas.
Power econ/military all the way. Religious unity is still one of the strongest national ideas, and heathen tolerance is amazingly helpful early on.Of these, I'd argue that Russia is the best idea group. The.immense. manpower gains make expansion at all stages of play much easier. Hilariously cheap infantry make max CW armies very easy to maintain in the mid to late game, along with double-CW stacks of infantry to reinforce. The 1.2 change to colonies makes Siberian Frontier incredibly strong due to the huge number of essentially free territory, which easily makes up for the lack of econ ideas.
10% tech reduction is also one of the strongest available ideas. All in all, Russia is my current pick for strongest idea group.That, of course, is just my opinion! What does everyone else think? Depends on what you want to do/value. Have not tried out Russia but agree with Brandenburg.
Switzerland is good as well due to econ advantages, a discipline buff and the economic buffs. The Hansa seem to be the richest country i n the world if you abuse their advantages of early colonial growth and shifting the capital to Manhattan. I think you need to create the best categories.
Best trader, best diplomat, best at war, best at manpower etc.The other thing to consider is things like Ragusa having great ideas but limited by being Ragusa. Novgorod makes a great Republic and Sienna has great potential in that regard as well.
I think the best way to evaluate these things are imgaine if you could take a nation but grab another countires ideas. Small site intended for planning out National Ideas for custom nations on Paradox Interactive's Europa Universalis IV game. It's hard to plan national ideas out of the blue because costs are not consistent, and are modified by the number of ideas you have on a particular area and the idea level. Initially, I only plan for this to work on-site, ephemerally. Later on, as I find time to work on it, I hope to add a save/load option (hopefully working directly with EU4's custom nation files so you can import directly into the game) and probably a sharing option that doesn't need sending anyone your exported custom nation file and just a link. By default, 200 points are assigned to use; you can customize the value if you want. Reserved points are for considering those to be used on tech-level, government or provinces. Select from each dropdown menu the idea you want and it will show you the level 1 modifier and cost; use the buttons on the right side to change the idea level. On the far-right side, you can see your current idea level count, for not going over 50% on any type set (as it gives you a heavy penalty on idea costs).
