Sony Handycam Dcr Hc40 Software For Mac
Plug it in via usb as if you had software. Open imovie or whatever movie editing software you have. In imovie if it is open and running when you plug in your sony handycam it should prompt you to extract the movie files. Its pretty straight forward after that. This was done on a macbook pro and using a third gen sony handycam. There is another way to extract the files under the movie.
We have the above-mentioned video camera and have just discovered that it is designed to connect to a computer via firewire. However, there is no lead in the box and nor do we have any computers in the family with firewire ports.
The camcorder itself has a four pin connector and we've discovered somebody on ebay who supplies a lead which has the four-pin connector at one end and USB 2.0 at the other.
I think that should do the job of connecting the camcorder to the computer but my brother is worried that it won't.
Anybody on here know if it will work? Thanks.

- #2Firewire and USB are not 100% electrically compatible. So I suspect that any simple bit of wire with just a plug on each end will cause nothing but grief.
If however it has some sort of electronics in the middle then it might work.
By far the best solution might be to buy a Firewire card for your PC. Just need a vacant PCI slot in the back. Or you can get PC cards that plug into a laptop slot if you prefer.
Have a look in Maplin or if you have no where else to go ( ) PC World. You might find something suitable there. Or look online if you prefer. Somewhere like eBuyer for example. - #3Firewire and USB are not 100% electrically compatible. So I suspect that any simple bit of wire with just a plug on each end will cause nothing but grief.

Thanks Chris. The guy selling this seems to imply that it will work from his ebay ad and he he has almost impeccable feedback.

What do you reckon? Definitely won't work? - #4It is a USB cable. Nothing at all to do with Firewire. And assuming I am looking at the right camera on the Sony website it doesn't have USB anyway.

So not entirely sure why you think that cable will work though? Nowhere on that eBay page does it mention your model of camera. Or am I missing something here? - #5Here is the answer regarding the cable.

I find it hard to believe you don't have firewire on any of your pcs.
Do you know what a firewire connection on a pc looks like? Here is a picture for you,

look for the words in the photo

Ok, I was assuming that a 4-pin Mitsumi connector had to be Firewire but reading your response and the ad again, it's clear it's actually a kind of USB.
Beintot - thanks but we have three netbooks and an old PC in the family, none of which support Firewire, only USB and USB 2.0.
Thanks for your responses people. Back to the drawing board.
Hi there,I have a rather annoying problem. I have Windows Vista Ultimate, with Sony Vegas, and my trust Sony DCR-HC40 Handycam. Sounds pretty nice, doesn't it? Except for the fact that they are not working together in unison. This camera came out around the time of XP SP 2, and Sony's website does not offer much help driver or software-wise.
Unless you have your original disc (with serial code on it). Well - it was a Christmas present over 5+ years ago, and I'm sorry Sony, but I just don't have that disc. And you could at least tell me if there is an updated driver out there somewhere for the camera! I went to a random driver-selling website and purchased the original XP Driver and PDF File Format version of the original owner's manual (which is worth crock). The Driver is an XP driver, so I set it for compatibility mode and it did install, but my PC still does not recognize the device (very well) and will not capture video.I'm really just trying to get the PC to capture the video streaming from the camera like it should.Making movies is my passion, and this setup is hurting that. Is there anybody out there that can help me? Anything is appreciated.Thanks,Daniel. I saw this situation on here, while doing searches on Google concerning the very same problem.
There is software called Roxio Easy (found good price on Amazon) that is supposed to take the place of the Sony Software that does not work on the newer Operating Systems. I've purchased it and a RCA or Sony cable (separately on eBay or Amazon). The cable that comes with the software has a USB connection but no connector to the camera. So I had to get a cable to hook up the camera to the USB cable. I bought the Roxio Easy Plus, which is the most current version because it copies almost anything to DVD.

Even VHS to DVD. Haven't had the chance to use it yet because the cable just came and my Camcorder is also at www.doctorsony.com(great deal on ebay)being fixed from the notorious bad CCD plague.
